Through the distribution and management of public funds, the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) achieves its mission to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well being, and communities. CSREES provides National program leadership to identify, develop, and mange programs to support land grant university-based and other institutional research, education, and extension, and provides fair and effective administration of the federal assistance.
Funded projects under the topic of alternative land use projects increased from 85 projects in 1999 to 180 projects in 2003. Funding increased from $970 million in 1999 to $2,825 million in 2003. A total of $12,233 million was invested by the end of 2003. In 1999, thirty-three states were funded. By 2003, forty-two states were funded, including historically black institutions and tribal colleges. Topics ranged from watersheds, forest, range, cropland management, farm land preservation and open space protection, as well as controlling urban growth.
Collaboration
CSREES maintains partnerships within USDA with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Forest Service, Farm Service Agency (FSA), Economic Research Service (ERS), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). CSREES values its external partnerships with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and others.
