Farmland protection and restoration and protection of natural lands such as unique forests and riparian corridors are the primary focus of the Campbell County Conservation District. Our work involves an active Farmland Work Group that promotes county agricultural enterprises and works with farmers to develop the economic and ecological potential of their farms. Our investment to date has been a concentrated effort to develop protocols for protection of farmland, beginning with identifying where our farms are, what they produce, and if they are economically viable or what they need to be so. We received a grant from our state Conservation Land Fund to procure a 135-acre tract of unique river-front property and are developing a restoration plan for the area. We are working, with two neighboring conservation districts, on a green infrastructure plan that will enable us to better target both technical and financial assistance. The Campbell County Conservation District was formed in 1945 by a vote of the citizens of the county. The District is a sub-unit of state government, locally led by seven elected officials.
