Under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol, the United States Botanic Garden is one of the oldest public garden in the US. We demonstrate sustainable practices in our horticulture, programs and operations as well as inform the public of resources and what they can do at home.
The USBG has partnered with the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to form the Sustainable Sites Initiative, an interdisciplinary effort of diverse group of stakeholder organizations to create national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction and maintenance practices. The U.S. Green Building Council is a stakeholder in the Initiative and anticipates incorporating the guidelines and performance benchmarks into future iterations of LEED®.
The USBG has partnered with the EPA Office of Water to develop and implement Green Infrastructure and Low Impact Design strategies in an effort to serve as an example to other Federal Agencies.
