The National Association of Regional Councils, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, recognized the Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission in Green Bay, WI as a Regional Center of Excellence for their green infrastructure program focused on land conservation and natural resource protection in May 2009. As a Regional Center of Excellence (RCE), they were featured in a workshop at NARC’s 43rd Annual Conference and Exhibition and carried out peer-to-peer information sharing activities over a nine-month project period. Bay-Lake began defining and mapping environmental corridors in 1997, providing information to cities and counties to facilitate the inclusion of green infrastructure protection in local planning and zoning efforts. With the RCE grant, Bay-Lake prepared, distributed and published posters about the benefits and tools for protecting valuable regional green infrastructure in their environmental corridors. The posters were distributed to each locality within the region and are available on the Bay-Lake website. Bay-Lake also worked with partner organizations, universities and natural resources organizations to raise awareness about green infrastructure protection.
