Virginia’s New River Valley is home to a multitude of resources, both natural and cultural, that are unique and valuable. The NRV is home to parts of the Jefferson and Washington National Forests, Claytor Lake State Park, with the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Crooked Road Music Trail weaving their way through the region. Since 2006, the New River Valley Planning District Commission has been actively engaged in a Green Infrastructure planning initiative to identify the interconnected network of open and natural areas in the region.
The NRVPDC partnered with The Conservation Fund to implement a wide-spread educational effort. During this time, the NRVPDC was working with local governments and other community organizations to form a steering committee to guide the green infrastructure process in the NRV. Following two years of education and outreach, the Green Infrastructure steering committee has been working to develop a set of maps depicting the important natural and cultural assets in the Valley.
Once these maps and an accompanying report are completed, the steering committee will again work, through education and outreach, to support green infrastructure planning.
